Plagiarism Education Week, April 22-26
It’s one of the more challenging times of the year, when you, as an educator, start grading the more writing-intensive assignments and discover a handful of students still plagiarizing parts of their paper. Despite the discussion of your expectations at the beginning of the semester and reminders throughout the class, something isn’t getting through.
Plagiarism Education Week was started to help educators foster student understanding that Originality Matters. How do we engage students in thinking critically about conducting better online research, using sources appropriately, and doing work that reflects their original thought? During this week, Turnitin is partnering with The International Center for Academic Integrity (ICAI), The School for Ethical Education (SEE), and Plagiarism Today to present a series of free, live webcasts that delve into key issues each day of the week. Attendees will also receive additional resources to help them continue the dialogue in their classrooms and at their institutions.
Of course Originality Matters to students as well—and our friends at Plagiarism.org will be highlighting some excellent new resources for students to educate themselves on plagiarism and citation. They will also be holding a student poster contest around the theme of “Originality Matters.” Students - Enter Poster Contest »

Selected journals are OA (open circles), hybrid (Nature Communications, for which currently 45% of the published articles are OA) and subscription-based (filled circles). The data reasonably follow exponential growth behaviour (lines are exponential fits; the dashed line for PLoS ONE to data for the first 24 months) with the indicated average annual growth rates. The number of papers were extracted from the journals' respective websites, and grouped into months according to publication date (PLoS ONE, Scientific Reports, Nature Communications and Soft Matter) or the journal's issue in which they were published (ACS Nano, Smalland Nature Materials).
