Selected journals are OA (open circles), hybrid (Nature Communications, for which currently 45% of the published articles are OA) and subscription-based (filled circles). The data reasonably follow exponential growth behaviour (lines are exponential fits; the dashed line for PLoS ONE to data for the first 24 months) with the indicated average annual growth rates. The number of papers were extracted from the journals' respective websites, and grouped into months according to publication date (PLoS ONE, Scientific Reports, Nature Communications and Soft Matter) or the journal's issue in which they were published (ACS Nano, Smalland Nature Materials).
